Majesticon, November 2000

A pretty good turn out for being Thanksgiving weekend.  I’m sure everybody was out of town or had other family obligations.  That didn’t seem to hurt the sales of the preview issue any.  I actually sold more this weekend than any other.  That’s pretty damn good for being extremely dead.  I hope the next one is a little more hoppin’.

I think the sales were good because I had a primo spot right as people walked in (thanks Monte!).  Then I plopped the monster Sony on the corner and flashed the new and improved slide show.  I had completely lost my previous slide show that I built in the hotel in San Diego and I hope to update this one even more for the next show.

I saw Matt Haley again, who I met out in San Diego.  He’s a good buddy with Monte and I was able to work out a killer pinup.  He had a whole bunch of samples of all his stuff…  Gen 13 and a bunch of other cool pinups.  Well judge for yourself on the Fan Page and see if you like it.  It’s a Haley all right.  He’s got a very distinctive style that’s all Matt (and a bag of chips).  There’s a lot of running around in tunnels and the sewers in issue 2 so it’ll fit well in that issue as a pinup or even an alternate cover.  That would be cool.  Jacinto (Chachj) Hernandez is going to ink it.  I don’t know how he does it with fitting it in with his day job as a graphic artist and a cartoonist in his spare time.  I can’t wait to see the finished product of Joe Comics.  The great Monte Moore is going to airbrush the pinup so it’ll be one cool piece when it’s finally done.  I’m sure they’ll be able to sell it for some big bucks and of course all the proceeds will be going to charity…  Yeah, the “Feed the Starving Artist” fund  :)

More Inked Pages

Alp is cruising right along.  I got more inked pages a few weeks ago and the last batch of issue #3 should be coming soon.  CiCi’ll be listed in previews yet.  It’s been a long road, but there is light.  A dim light, but it’s getting brighter and brighter as the days fade away.  I almost got nostalgic around Thanksgiving because that was the inception date of this site a full two years ago.   Until that time nobody really knew about the project and now that it’s out for all to see I know many have been waiting patiently.  I hope they’re not disappointed.

A Colorful Pinup

Matt Marsilia’s pinup is finally inked and colored.  One of Matt’s friends from Top Cow, Eric Basaldua, put some mighty fine ink down on the page, and then Beth Sotelo, another friend from the Cow, came along with her stunning colors.  Beth e-mailed the finished file in two parts.  The K part of the CMYK file was split out to get under a file size limit.  But the CMY part was still about 23 MB.  Once I brought the two pieces together on this end the file ended up being about 34 MB.  It arrived just in time for the Majesticon.  I was able to print a few proofs to make sure the colors were reproducible.  They definitely were on the Tekrontics so I sent it to the big HP.  This printer spit out a HUGE poster which was about 34” x 53”.  It turned out gorgeous and I had it laminated to preserve the beauty.  It hung proudly in the Spilled Milk booth at the Majesticon and caused a lot of stir (at least with the small crowd that showed up).

The Reviews Are IN!

I added a reviews page to cache or link to the various reviews that people have done.  Now they weren’t all GLOWING reviews, but I put them out there anyway.  What some people don’t like others obviously do.  But most importantly YOUR FEEDBACK is out there too.  Is yours up there?  Did you buy the book and just not read it yet?  Thanks to all the people that let me post their feedback and reviews.  If you want your comments out there you can send them in and say you want them posted.  I’ll do my best to get them on the board.

The New New Laptop

I forget when I got this thing.  It’s been a while since I wrote an update or pushed stuff out to the site.  It’s a Gateway Solo 9300 with an 800 MHz Mobile Pentium III under the hood.  It doesn’t have the memory as my old machine, but with a 20 gig HD I can do all my programming from the COUCH!  That’s pretty cool.  I had converted the development site to an actual Front Page web so I was having trouble publishing out to SpilledMilk.com (the site you see).  Once I got the bugs worked out and we switched to AT&T local I’m able to now publish and walk away from my computer.  The signal does not drop.  It’s amazing.  I’d lose the connection at least 5 or 6 times during a big push out to the site and I’d have to start all over again every single time.  Once the AT&T @home service is installed I’ll be really smokin’.  But it’s not all fun and games.  With the new laptop brings more programming work home too due to the “have to have” deadlines at the end of the year.  Depending on the night I’d typically work until 2:00 am and get up at 7:00 am.  So I’d get an extra 3-4 hours in a night.

The New New Me

Around mid August (8/19/00) I started on this Advocare Weight Loss plan  (www.Advocare.com ).  I was at 238 with a 40-inch waist.  And now I’m hovering around 195 or so with a 34.75-inch waist.  So it didn’t come off instantly, but slowly but surely it came off and it was drop dead easy.  A little on the pricey side, but aren’t they all?  At least this worked for me and I’m still losing.  I remember before Christmas of 1999 I was a little over 250 so the plan really sped things up.  I know, I know it’s not really comic related, but it means I’ve got a ton more energy so I can work more and require less sleep.

The Rant

Sorry, I didn’t have time for a rant tonight.  Maybe that’s the only reason that you read this newsletter?  I hope not.

Thanks for all your support,
